Discover Los Angeles lists the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Universal Studios Hollywood, the Hollywood Roosevelt, the Hollywood Bowl and Yamashiro among the neighborhood's icons. The Hollywood Walk of Fame's own FAQ cites more than 2,800 stars, so figures vary by source and date. At Hollywood/Highland station, the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Bowl, Madame Tussauds and the Dolby Theatre (home of the Oscars) are within walking distance; Hollywood/Vine serves the Pantages Theatre and Amoeba Music, and Hollywood/Western leads to Thai Town dining.
Practical notes
Griffith Observatory is reachable by a DASH bus from Metro's Vermont/Sunset station (Discover Los Angeles). The Observatory is open Tuesday–Friday noon–10 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m.–10 p.m., closed Monday, and park access is free (see things to do). For fares see the transportation guide.

Hollywood works as a one-day sightseeing block rather than as the only place you stay. If you want beaches or quiet streets, base yourself in Santa Monica or Silver Lake and visit Hollywood by Metro.
